Day 1 – Candy store

Today was my first day at my new job. Lots of new hire type work for the day, lots of forms to fill out and documents to read. It was really too much for my brain during that time so it rebelled and started to hurt at 2pm. However it got better because that was when the toys began to arrive. First it was the laptop, Thinkpad T43, not shabby(but not super new either), its much lighter than my last work laptop(my back is happy again) and a bit faster. Then a couple hours later came two(yes 2) Dell 24″ widescreen monitors(I drooled a little) and to complete it a new workstation with a video card to drive both of those beasts at once. A fun day for me, toys toys toys.
It looks like this is going to be a fun job(not just based on the toy count) and keep me busy while I’m there.

AJAX File Manager

Relay is an AJAX based file-manager. It looks very pretty, however I’d be curious on how it taxes my little co-located server. If its not slow it might be a nice option for when I am on a strange computer.

Life on the lot

As expected parking in lots sucks everywhere and Yahoo!’s offices are no exception.

I frequent public daily parking lots to my travels to and from NYC and the offenses commited in the pictures detailed on that Flickr account are amusing yet frustrating to me. A couple months ago someone did some nice damage to my passenger side door. I have not fixed it yet but the cost is going to run around $600. I should make car length foam dividers that extend out from under the body to protect the finish from the careless, cellphone talking, reckless door swinging commuter.

Roll your own .mac service

This guy has written an article on how he implemented his own .mac service. I’ve been waiting for someone to do this, so that I wouldn’t have to figure it out.

Thoughts on Crash

Just finished watching the movie Crash. It just hurt to watch it, not because it sucked but because the people it were just suffering through thier lives. Since they suffer they take out the pain they have on the world around them, manifested in racism, anger, frustration, drugs, and violence. The effects of this all come back and all the characters are changed for life, some for good, some for bad. There is not real dominant emotion over this movie made me feel but it made me thankful for the place I am in and for the way I live. God fills that void that the world’s problems rips open. I’d be a wreck.
God is Good.

Tech. Support

I would love to do this once to some of the more exploitive home users who ask for help a lot.

A New Beginning

Someone said described my point in life right now as a new beginning and that has stuck with me for the past 2 days.

Yesterday I started my fulltime job and kicked off my working life with a taste of the mundane. I spent my first day doing manual labor. There were large tangled boxes of assorted wires which I spent a good part of the day sorting, organizing, and velcroing. I did it to myself, no one told me to do that but I decided to do the job that no one else would want to do, mostly because I want to keep myself humble.

Its going to be time to rename this blog since it seems I have entered the real world already.

I’m Done!

Vector analysis exam is over, my on-campus work obligations are fulfilled. I am complete. Time to move home!

Grades!

Grades are arriving, so far so good. My first final I ended up with a B+ in the course(Math of Finance). My Data Communication Network Devices course was an A(as expected). The irony is all the course leading up to this one I got C’s in. Why? because the classes sucked, the material was irrelevant and unrelated. They revamped all the classes one semester after I took them so Dave is getting A’s in them. Three more grades pending(2 of them *should* be A’sc, one more final(Wednesday) and then….I’m done. For real done.

Once In a While They Get It Right

Senate was unable to reauthorize the PATRIOT Act and I’m pretty happy about that. I really do not see the benifits in trading significant amounts of privacy so that the government can try to stop terrorists. Why? It will not work, any intelligent human can thwart any number of security measures so by giving away our privacy we are just losing privacy and gaining very little.
Now all they need to do is figure out that the DMCA is another useless act and get rid of it. I won’t count on the government not playing to big business with that.
